2nd Trex450 Aerial Video

The weather finally turns well so I get the chance to fly my trex450 with the new canopy desgin. It's dull shape doesn't seems to affect any of it's flying ability. It is still as stable while hovering and has as much speed during a forward flight.

I was flying rather high this time. It was actually a bit nervous flying that high, afterall I'm no expert of RC helicopters. Anyways I got the video. The camera was tilted at the correct angle this time, pointing horizontally, and I tired my best to fly stably in the wind.

DIY T-rex 450 Canopy for Aerial Videos

The original trex canopy wont fit with my video camera installed, so I decided to custom build one. The new canopy is built with 3mm foam and thin plywood. It is light so additional flying weight is not my greatest concern. I'm more worry on if the dull shape of the canopy would create massive drag when air is pushed down from the rotor. The weather is bad out there so I could not test flight it yet. Can't wait to see my t-rex flying with this cool silly looking canopy!

First Helicopter Aerial Video Attempt

Off I went to the field early this morning to shoot my first ever in-flight video on a RC helicopter. Wind condition is perfect, no wind at all. Temperature is a bit cold (-10) but the sun is up to warm things up a bit.

The C.G seems to be pretty well balanced even with the new payload (the Speed DX8 video camera). The 1100mah 25C light weight li-po did fin. The only disadvantage is that my flight is limited to about 2 minutes only (3.8v for each battery cell after the flight).
The camera is tilted a bit downwards too much. During a heli fight, the heli is often a few degrees nose down providing the horizontal trust component for forward flight. I should have slightly adjusted the video camera to be facing upwards so that I wont be videoing the ground for most of the time. More in-flight videos coming soon!

T-rex 450 Conversion - Aerial Video Platform

I've always enjoy taking in-flight videos with onboard cameras. I’ve done it many times with planes but never with a heli. My heli flying skills have improved a lot lately and I’m planning to take my first heli in-flight video soon with my T-rex 450 Helicopter. The video camera I will be using is the Speed DX8, which is quite a light video camera with 640x480 resolutions. Instead of using the origonal 2200 mah li-po I’m also planning to use a 1100mah battery instead to reduce the flying weight. Here are the modifications I made on my T-rex 450.

1. remove battery tray
2. relocate the Speed Controller and BEC to the side of the air frame
3. secure the Speed DX8 video camera with rubber bands
4. 1100 mah li-po secured underneath the air frame

Birthday Flying

Well, its Feb 16th, I finally turned 18... and I want to do something special to celebrate this time...

The sky is blue, wind is clam, weather is warm... my li-po batteries are fully charged...
off I went flying my Trex 450. Heli flying is a very new kind of flying to me, all I could do is hovering and some simple "lazy 8s". No stunts at all but who cares, fun enoguh for me!
